Second Grade Class

Second Grade
Ash Wednesday we begin our lessons on Lent for both 1st and 2nd grades.  Second grade will also be studying about forgiveness and Reconciliation.  Both classes will learn more about The Stations of the Cross.

Out of four reading groups, three are reading in Read Well Plus.  All groups continue to improve.  Your child should be reading every day.  Reading is assigned for homework, but you should find extra reading for your child.  The more that is read, the better.

We have started our chapter on telling time and counting money.  These are hard concepts for some children.  Please help your child if you notice them having trouble.  Be patient, this will be continued in third grade too.  Find a fun way to help.  Maybe use real money and let your child really buy something like a watch so they can practice telling time.

Keep up the good work!

My email address is awangler@santaclaraacademy.org.  If you have any questions, please email or write me a note.  You may write in the homework folder.  I check these every day.

Second grade has been learning about God’s forgiveness.  They will have the Act of Contrition to learn.  Please help them memorize the words.  Both 1st and 2nd graders have been learning more about Lent.  Don’t forget about the religion web site.  www.WEBELIEVEweb.com

We are about finished with our unit on counting money and telling time.  Our math book has a free interactive web site.  Spring Break would be a good time for them to explore and practice their math.  www.sadlier-oxford.com

In Science, we are almost finished with our book about teeth.  We completed our Unit on Earth’s Resources and took the test.  Most of the students love Science.

First and Second grade are going on a Field Trip to see the play “The Wizard of Oz” on April 29.  We will also have lunch at CiCi’s Pizza.  You will be receiving more information later.

We started the chapter on two digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.  Your student must remember to add or subtract the ONES first and then the TENS.  (Start on the right side.)  We are also learning about shapes, geometry, fractions, and probability.  Don’t forget about the web site: www.sadlier-oxford.com.

In science, we are making a Dinosaur Book and listening to some interesting music about dinosaurs.  We will also work on a class science fair project.

We will continue with our ELA studies. (Reading, Writing, Spelling, and English/Grammer)

RELIGION is our big event for this month!  1st Reconciliation is April 18, after the Friday Mass.  Please help your child know their Act of Contrition by heart and say it with feeling.  Go over the steps for a good confession.

THIS IS FOR ANY STUDENT PREPARING FOR 1ST COMMUNION!

2nd Grade May News

Our most important News is that 2nd Grade along with 7 older students made their 1st Reconciliation and their First Communion!

Now they may receive the Body of Christ.  Parents, please take them to Mass and be a good example for these Children of God who are growing in their faith.  They should be taken to Confession often (once a month) is what has been suggested to me.  I want to thank everyone who helped with these two wonderful events.

In Math, we have started working with subtraction of double digit numbers with and without regrouping.  We will continue to work with fractions. Over the summer, your child should continue to practice their math skills.  Most places have math workbooks for different grade levels.  This would be a good summer investment.

In Science, we finished our experiment.  Ask for an explanation of what our class did together and what our conclusion was.  We have started a chapter on Weather and Space.

We are still making wonderful progress in Reading.  This is also something that should be continued over the summer.  The Library usually has some summer activities.  Keep your child reading!
