Mrs. Lynch's

4th Grade Class

In 4th Grade, we have been persistent in our efforts to learn dictionary skills necessary to guide/ assist us in our reading journey. We have tirelessly been getting the dictionary respelling of new vocabulary words, their part of speech, forming derived words by adding prefixes and suffixes to the basewords and learning the meaning of these derived words. Of course, it’s a challenge to be familiar with the definition of spelling words given every 2 weeks but they are building blocks in our stage of READING TO LEARN!!!

We have started reading fiction chapter books- realistic fiction, historical fiction, folk tales, etc. and reading aloud lyrical poems/limericks which our class enjoys so much aside from the selections we have taken up in our Reading subject. By November, we’ll be able to write our own limericks and lyrical poems and have them submitted for possible publication in one of the national magazines.

In Grammar, we have taken up the first part of speech-NOUNS. It’s so interesting to know every subtopic of this very important part of speech.

At present, we are learning the 4 kinds of sentences. Our classroom becomes a mini theatre when we start reading aloud exclamatory sentences from story excerpts. The challenging part is writing our own sentences showing different feelings of happiness, excitement, anger and fear. We read them in front of the class showing the type of feeling asked for. We welcome the CHALLENGE that everyday brings!

The 4th Grade continues to take up lessons on Salvation History in Religion. For the start of the Advent Season this week, we’ll prepare a calendar of ways/things that we can do to celebrate/prepare for the coming of Jesus, and the best way is by helping others. We’ll also focus reading Matthew 25: 31-40 and encourage other young people to read these and other related Bible passages in order to see that Jesus continues to come to us today in others. Let our families prepare for a wonderful Christmas season by doing kind and thoughtful things to others.

In Math, we’ve finished multiplying 3-4 digits by 1-2 digits more effectively by knowing the timetables and every step in the multiplication process. This week, we’ll review addition, subtraction and multiplication in order to round up the SUM, DIFFERENCE and PRODUCT to the nearest hundreds, thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands.

In Language Arts, we’ll study the lyrical poem “John the Baptist” integrated with Religion concepts of John the Baptist’s call to prepare the way of the Lord in our hearts. Likewise, Science and Social Studies concepts will be integrated with Religion these next 2 weeks. We’ll take up Bible animals and explore the  map of Biblical times.

In Religion, our lesson is on Sacramental Awareness. The Catholic belief about sacraments is that God communicates through the people, places, actions, events and experiences that shape a person’s life. The Christian view of reality is that God can be found in the midst of life and creation , as well as beyond life and creation. By studying the 7 Sacraments, the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit and Creation, we will appreciate more the gift of life as well as our faith in God.

In Language Arts, we’ll integrate these concepts on Sacramental Awareness to take a closer look of the many events in our daily life that show God’s presence. We’ll write haiku, limericks, free verse poems, lyrical poems and diamante poems to express our appreciation of the sacraments and our family and school experiences. The Writing Department of Bishop Lynch is inviting us to turn in some poems for possible publication in their school paper this February.

In Math, we have hurdled dividing numbers from 2 digits by 1 digit up to 4 digits by 1 digit. Now, we’re preparing to go up a notch by dividing 4 digits by 2 digits. We know that this requires conscientious effort to follow all the steps to divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the succeeding digit and going over the cycle again. On top of that, we’d have to do checking by multiplying the quotient with the divisor and adding the remainder to it to get back to the given dividend. Isn’t Math amazing? It’s listening and responding actively- 2 aspects of sacramental awareness.

In Science, we are studying the parts and functions of one of God’s fantastic creations- FLOWERS. He is also a gardener joining us as we take time looking at the attractive petals, searching for the sepal, stamen and pistil and what lies within it using a hand lens.

In Social Studies, we have traveled virtually in the different geographic regions of the U.S. Now, we know the state and capital of the 50 states, their variety of climate, landforms, waterforms, resources, means of transportation, population growth , economic and political life. This year, the campaign season for the upcoming presidential election has started earlier than usual. Since voting is a way of making decisions in the U.S., let us join in prayer that we, U. S. citizens, will continue to believe and commit ourselves to share ideas, work hard, command respect by reason of virtue and good deeds, and share pride in the form of government that we support together.

                                                      4th Grade

In our Religion class, we continue to explore the meaning of sacrament as Catholics understand it in the 7 sacraments. Each of the 7 sacraments is a celebration to those ways that God reaches out to us in friendship. February 6 is Ash Wednesday- a time when we prepare for LENT. During Lent, we take time to think again of our baptism, and the promises made then, when we first shared in the new life Jesus won for us.

In the Rite of Baptism,an adult says no to sin and yes to God’s life of grace. For children too young to understand this choice of life of sin or grace, their parents and sponsors say yes by renewing their own baptismal promises, with the understanding that they will try to guide the children toward grace and away from sin. Remembering that we are born anew into God’s life affects the way we look at our life decisions. We try to see things as Jesus would. Rebirth into God’s life affirms that Jesus shares our life and He journeys with us everyday through all our experiences.

Each one in our class has prepared a February calendar of Biblical passages to reflect on  and a 4-week list of activities to do this LENT focusing on the 3 sacraments- Baptism, Confirmation & Reconciliation.

In Math, we continue to hurdle dividing 3-4 digits by 2 digits with multiples of 10,100 & 1000 as divisors and other two-digit divisors.

In Language Arts, we have submitted last Monday, February 4, some lyrical poems for possible publication to the Bishop Lynch High School’s Anthology of Poetry. Also, our new story about ‘Fly Traps” takes us to the tropical rainforests all over the world. This lesson is integrated in Science and Social Studies. There seems to be a heightened interest to look closely and study about the relationships that exist between plants, animals and other living things and the places they live in among students and adults these days . That’s because of the concern for GLOBAL WARMING.After having known the 4 geographic regions in Texas – its plant/animal life, its climate, land/water forms, we have seen how these features and factors continue to attract migrants and tourists to Texas. At times, we also get concerned as we discuss in class how drastically 30-50 year old trees have given way to newly-built condominiums, residential homes and interstate highways.

With your family, take time this Lent to recall and rejoice in your baptism.By being a sacramental presence ourselves, we help make those around us more aware of  God’s love.
