| The Fifth Grade class is busy preparing for our field trip, October 3 to Holy Trinity Seminary in recognition of Vocation Awareness Day. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the trip.
In Health the students are preparing brochures on playground, traffic and sports safety. In doing so, the students will be able to practice the rules as they play on our new, well-equipped new play area.
Science, Religion and Social Studies are intertwined as we learn about minerals, mining and the effects on our Earth and humanity.

Our students are writing, writing, writing! We have completed our first research paper on Native Americans. The children are learning basic research techniques and documentation.
November 16th is the day the research paper on the famous scientist is due. The children will provide the teacher a paragraph of Intent on Monday, Nov. 5th. The paragraph will note the paper topic chosen. The paper is to be divided into four sections. These sections are research methods, biography, the great work or discovery, and how and why the great work is important today. The resource page should reflect the sources and should be in MLA format.
Parents, if your child goes to a library for research, please have a responsible adult present. This is for your child’s safety and protection.
Happy thanksgiving to all of you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Walker

The fifth grade students are becoming immersed in the Humanities as a way to study and understand our world. We are learning something about the art work of the early American colonists, hearing music from the great composers, and studying the major literary genres. We will watch on a DVD, the Moscow Ballet perform the Nutcracker just before the Christmas vacation. The content is rich with the astonishing function of the human body, the art and science of musical instruments, history, and the joy and beauty of the fairy tale, and the performance of the ballet. Reading and writing across the curriculum with the incorporation of subjects is a major component and activity of literacy.
Our children are learning the patriotic sounds and songs of United States of America and the protocol for our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. We will be singing Christmas carols to celebrate the rich tradition of American and Christian history. The children have been studying tradition, revelation and inspiration in Religion class and through the course of the settlements of America. God Bless America! Also, we will watch selected portions of a DVD of George Frederic Handel’s, Messiah. This music was most certainly composed under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit!
Our students have completed a basic introduction to lab safety and will begin performing some experiments this week. We will carry out experiments with careful aseptic technique and learn to begin to think as scientists.
We wish each of you a safe and Blessed Christmas!
Respectfully,
Ms. Walker and the students of the Fifth Grade Class |
The students have been learning to live life as a colonist in the new world. We have been studying how the colonists had to hunt for food, learn to farm, make textiles and clothes by hand, and wait for the supply ship from England. We have explored the ancient art of textile making, learned about combing and carding wool, and observed how to use a hand spindle and a spinning wheel.
Since we are studying introductory genetics in science, the children were shown how to work basic Punnet Squares and what probability is and that it exists. We will soon be learning the metric system and apply the measurements to daily life, making a small demonstration quilt, and how the metric system is used in the science lab.
Parents, please send a small sewing kit and scissors to school for the quilt project. For some research, we will investigate the kinds of weapons used in the 17th and 18th century.
Our reading this quarter will be a work or works by Herman Melville, a great American author.
The fifth graders are selecting science topics to teach to the Pre-K children.
Sincerely,
Ms. Walker |
Fifth Grade News The word from the Groundhog is that we are to experience six more weeks of winter. That is of no consequence to the Santa Clara Fifth Graders because the green bean seeds that we have planted are sprouting within the shelter of our class. We are learning to keep a log, or record of observations, those things which we can see going on with our new plants. Remember, now is the time to plan your Spring gardens! Our Social Studies project was to prepare four-square quilt pieces, as the colonists would have done. Our next chapter will begin with the onset of the Revolutionary War, and the poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” that we will study along with poetry in Language Arts. On a more somber note, February 6th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of our Lenten Season. Let us take the time to more fully examine our conscience and become closer to God. Sincerely, Ms. Walker and the Fifth Grade Class

The fifth grade students have been working diligently on their ABC books for their chosen science topic and are now ready to present them to their classmates and to the PreK children. The content of the books demonstrate a great deal of effort on the part of the students! Books, books and more books, the fifth graders presented oral book reports in first person of one of the characters. The students enjoyed this because not only did they get to dress up and all of us learned about many books today.
Our forthcoming field trip will be Thursday, March 6 to the Fair Park Music Hall to see the famous opera, “Tosca.” We look forward to the event and the refinement that great music instills within us.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

As I begin to write this, our fifth grade class is doing a study of the art work of Russian born, Wassily Kandinsky, a man who changed the way art is painted and viewed. In their own way the students are experimenting with color, lines, shapes, and as well are learning some background history of the artist and of the beautiful country in which he was born . The students also are dramatizing geometric lines within in the definition of their works.
Their pieces of work will demonstrate displays of English grammar as the students will write descriptive essays about their project.
We are preparing for the upcoming science fair and will be writing reports on states.
There is still much work to do in this last quarter!
Respectfully,
Ms. Walker |
Fifth Grade News
We have begun to read and study the epic novel, Moby Dick and we are learning to understand allegory and symbolism through great literary works. In addition, the students are excited about Field Day and the many competitions that they will enjoy.
There are only a few more weeks of school, however, we will be busy building simple machines and learning about electricity, light, and matter.
Thank you all parents for your understanding, concern, and participation throughout the school year. I extend a most sincere thank you to Mrs. Gonzalez, Mrs. Nunez and all of the other parents who have assisted us with field trips and the other work that could not have been done without your help.
Have a cool, safe summer.
Sincerely,
Ms. Walker
