Kindergarten Class

Kindergarten kicked off the school year with a wonderful start! We have been very busy learning our colors, shapes, days of the week and numbers. Last week we began our phonics program and started with the letter “Ll.”  During religion we have been taking about all of God’s wonderful creations, including us.  We have so much to be thankful for! We are also working on our first class book. It is modeled after a classic book, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Eric Carle. We hope to share if with our families during Open House.

Mrs. Streit

The past month of kindergarten has been a very exciting one! We are learning so much with our phonics program. We almost know all of our letter sounds and we read our first book “Hot, Hot Hot!” It is such a thrilling time when they first begin to read.  Please, remember to practice the sight words with your child daily. This will help their reading progress so much!

Kindergarteners also enjoy writing in their journal and ABC center time. We will begin our poem portfolios this month and each week we have been making a page for our ABC books.  We have also been learning about the saints to prepare us for All Saint’s Day. One of our favorite songs is “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

We have been enjoying our class mascot, “Star.” Star is a stuffed frog that gets to spend the weekend with each student. The student records the weekend activities in a journal and the journal stays in our class library during the week. It is a great home literacy connection and the children love it. Star has been to many exciting places and loves being in kindergarten at Santa Clara.

The star students for October were Anthony Martinez, Angel Castaneda, Edward Limones and Madeline Sabedra. Great job! I am so proud of all my students!

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving and will be spending this month counting our blessings!

Kindergarten

November was a wonderful month in Kindergarten. We learned all about being thankful and how Thanksgiving started. Thank you to everyone who attended our Thanksgiving luncheon. It meant so much to have you there. The students of the month are being recognized for being thankfulness. Way to go, Julio Narvaez and Jessica Aguilar!

Each day we are learning to read and write more.  Every morning we spend time writing and illustrating our journals. A few kindergartners are even writing sentences by themselves. (Ask your child to write a sentence for you). Each week we get to bring a special book home to read to our families. We love reading our books in a bag!!!

In math we are continuing to work with numbers 0-10, patterns and have started learning ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc).

Remember to work with your child on their homework every night. It is essential for their growth and development. Thank you!

In December we will be learning about winter and celebrating the real meaning of Christmas; Jesus! I hope everyone has a blessed holiday and a happy new year!

This semester will be a very exciting one in Kindergarten! We are going to be reading everyday in our small reading groups. Make sure your child is reading their “book in a bag” every night. They should be able to read most of it by themselves.

We will also be spending a lot of time writing. Since we have learned all our letter sounds, we are working on reading/writing words by ourselves.

In math we will begin learning about comparisons which will lead into addition and subtraction.

This month we are studying winter and bears. In religion we are learning the ways we can celebrate and share God’s love with our friends and families. My students are very thankful for their families and friends. And, I’m so thankful for each one of them!

I continue to be amazed everyday by the progress they are making. I’m looking forward to a very successful semester. Let’s keep up the good work!

May God bless all of you in 2008!

Kindergarten

January has been a busy month for us! We finished our TPRI testing and I am so pleased with the progress they have made since the beginning of the year. TPRI is an early reading assessment that happens three times a year. They are working very hard, especially with reading. I love seeing their excitement for reading.

This week was a special week because we celebrated our 100th day of school on February 4th. I enjoyed seeing the 100 items that the students brought in to share with the class. On the 100th day we made trail mix with 100 pieces, we did 100 fingerprints, filled out a 100’s chart and wrote what we would buy with 100 dollars. We really enjoyed our 100th day of kindergarten!

We are looking forward to our class field trip to the Dallas Majestic Theatre at the end of February. We will be seeing the musical, “Winnie the Pooh.”

Parents please continue reading every night with your child and continue practicing number flashcards 1-100.  Kindergarten, keep up the great work!!!

Mrs. Streit

We are very busy as we approach the end of the school year! I’m so proud of each of my students. They have accomplished so much this year. They are becoming great readers and writers!

We have finished learning our letter sounds. We are now focusing on long and short vowels. We will continue to read and write everyday. In math we are going to learn to tell time and begin addition and subtraction. In science we are going to study plants and flowers. In religion we are learning to pray and working on memorizing the Lord’s Prayer. We are also thankful for all God’s springtime creations!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Kindergarten Graduation on May 23, 2008 at 10am!

Kindergarten

I can’t believe in two weeks we’ll be celebrating kindergarten graduation! I remember telling the students in August that they will be graduating this year. One of the students said “But I don’t know how to graduate.” I replied, “You will!”

The children that came to me in August are not the same children that are graduating. They have grown socially, academically and spiritually. They have truly surpassed my expectations.

Parents, thank you for your support this year. Always, remember you are your child’s first teacher and that will never change!!!

To my kindergarteners, thank you making my first year of teaching a wonderful one. I will never forget the time we spent learning, laughing and growing!
