OUR SCHOOL LIBRARIAN IS
MRS. KRIEG

Reminders: All students who participated in their local public library’s Summer Reading Program can get an invitation to the SRC party to be held this month. SRC stands for Summer Reading Club. All you have to do to get an invitation to the party is bring the signed certificate that you received from the public library to Mrs. Krieg, SCA Librarian, by Thursday, September 20th. Each party member will receive a free dress down day, a goodie bag, and an extra recess. Don’t miss the party, make  sure you turn in your certificate by September 20th!

Announcement: September is Library Card Sign-up Month. Students showing  Mrs. Krieg a library card from their local public library can earn a special reward. The library card must have the student’s name written on it. Students have until the last school day in September to show their library card to Mrs. Krieg, that due date is September 20th.

Announcement:   Mrs. Krieg  will be managing several reading incentive programs again this school year. These programs will run simultaneously from September 4th through May 16th. The program sponsors require that the students meet various reading goals in order to earn prizes. All reading for these programs must be done at home under the supervision of a parent or guardian and not in school. This year the Reading logs will be in the form of a book mark which parents will use to mark off minutes read in  10 minute intervals, then they’ll sign and return the book marks after each set of 100 minutes. Ask your child about his/her book mark titled “Library Stars Reading Log.” Watch for more information to come about the individual programs, such as Braum’s Book Buddy, Pizza Hut Book It, Six Flags read to  succeed, and SCA Great Minds Read.

Volunteers Needed:  Mrs. Krieg, the SCA Librarian, is in great need of volunteers to serve the school and the students.  She needs help in the library with shelving books, straightening the shelves, and book maintenance.  Half an hour or more from several volunteers each week would make a big difference in the library.  Volunteers to help with Book Fairs will be needed soon as well.  Please contact Mrs. Krieg for more information mkrieg@santaclaraacademy.org or contact her at the school in person or by phone (214-333-9423) during school hours, Monday through Friday, 12:45 to 4:30 p.m.

SRC Party Invitation:  The S.R.C. Party (Summer Reading Club Party) will be held on Monday, October 15th, from 2:15 to 2:45 in the library.  The following students are invited to the party because they have given Mrs. Krieg their Summer Reading Club certificates from their local public libraries by the due date of September 28th.  This party invitation includes the following gifts for each guest on the invitation list:  a free Dress Down Day, an extra 30 minute recess, a goodie bag, plus a potential bonus gift.  The students listed below may enjoy the free Dress Down Day on Monday, Oct. 15th only.  The invitation list includes the following 4 students:  Gerardo Vazquez (1st grade), Anthony Quintero (2nd grade), Jonathan Aguero (4th grade), and Katherine Fernandez (5th grade).

Recognition:  September was Library Card Sign-Up Month.  Congratulations to all the SCA students who showed Mrs. Krieg their library cards by the due date of September 28th.  They each had their own library cards from their local public libraries with their names on them.  Each earned a reward of 2 prize tickets for having their own library card.  The following 9 students showed Mrs. Krieg their library cards:  Elizabeth Cerda (6th), Madeline Sabedra (K), Vanessa Monjaras (6th), Anthony Quintero (2nd), Alex Berlanga (7th), Gerardo Vazquez (1st), Ashten Higginbotham (1st), Selena Gonzalez (5th), and Sophia Silva (K).

Recognition:  Students can earn one prize ticket for every Reading Log Bookmark they turn in to Mrs. Krieg.  SCA students are encouraged to read at home for recreation every day.  An adult at home must monitor their child’s reading so that they can honestly sign the Reading Log Bookmark agreeing that they saw their child read the 100 minutes.  Students may not include reading done for homework.  Students can pick up another Reading Log Bookmark in the library anytime the library is open, i.e. Monday through Friday 12:45 to 4:30 p.m.  The following 9 students have already reached the Red Star Level for reading 300 minutes:  Madeline Sabedra (K), Gerardo Vazquez (1st), Eddie Ramos (2nd), David Cantu IV (3rd), Janelly Solis (3rd), Gisselle Bravo (5th), Elizabeth Cerda (6th), Susan Herrera (6th), and Vanessa Monjaras (6th).  Keep up that great reading pace!

Reminder:  All SCA students, Pre-kindergarten through 8th graders, are eligible and encouraged to participate in various reading incentive programs.  The following programs will run simultaneously throughout this school year:

1. SCA Library sponsors Great Minds Read  from September 1 - May 16 for Pre-kindergarten through 8th graders.  The goals are printed at the bottom of the Reading Log Bookmarks.  The rewards for meeting the goals are SCA prize tickets and recognition.

2. Pizza Hut sponsors Book It! from October 1 – March 31 for Kindergarten through 6th graders.  The goals are 300 minutes (or three Reading Log Bookmarks) each month.  The rewards are SCA prize tickets and coupons for free personal pan pizzas.  Earn up to 1 coupon each month.

3. Braums sponsors Book Buddy from October 1 – May 16 for 1st through 5th graders.  The goals are 6 book reviews.  The rewards are SCA prize tickets and coupons for free ice cream.  Earn one coupon for every 6

book reviews turned in to Mrs. Krieg for a total of up to 6 coupons.

Library News – November 1, 2007

November 12-16, is Children’s Book Week, and people across the country will be celebrating in schools, libraries, bookstores, and homes.  Santa Clara Academy Catholic School will be celebrating Children’s Book Week by having a Book Mark Contest, DEAR Day with guest readers, and a Book Drive for Charity.  We hope you’ll be able to join us for some of our activities.

Book Mark Contest – Students will have fun designing their own bookmarks.  I will provide blank bookmarks for each student.  Classes will be grouped to compete for prizes and ribbons as follows:   PK & K, 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, and 7th & 8th.  Students should think of a favorite book or a catchy jingle or saying that promotes reading and can be printed and illustrated on their bookmark.  Wednesday, November 14th, bookmarks will be displayed in the library for judging.

DEAR Day – D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything and Read.  On Friday, November 16th, everyone brings their favorite slippers and stuffed animal to school for a comfortable time spent enjoying books.  Parent volunteers are needed to be guest readers in several classrooms.  Won’t you consider reading your favorite childhood picture book to your child’s class.  Call or email Mrs. Krieg at 214-333-9423 or mkrieg@santaclaraacademy.org if you can come and read to one or more classes this day.

Book Drive for Charity – Please consider bringing new and gently used books to school to donate to a local youth charity.  You can drop off your book donations in the school library.

I’d also like to encourage you to spend time reading with your child during this very special week. Here are some other ideas for celebrating Children’s Book Week at home.

·          During dinner, each family member should share their current favorite book by naming the title, author and illustrator, and giving a brief description of the book and why it’s a favorite.

·          Go to the library or a bookstore as a family and help each other pick out new books to bring home.

·          Work with your child and some friends to develop a play based on a scene from their favorite book. Invite family and friends to view the production. Remember to take pictures.

·          Write a story based on some favorite book characters.  Work together as a family to develop plot ideas. (I’d love to see the finished story.)

·          After dinner, instead of watching television, read aloud from a book (or books) to each other. If you haven’t been read to in a while, you’ll be surprised by how much fun it is.

Happy Children’s Book Week!

Teachers,
Please inform and encourage your students regarding this opportunity for them to earn a
FREE ticket to Six Flags.  Each student is required to complete 360 minutes of pleasure
reading over a two month period in order to get their FREE ticket.  This program is for
Kindergarten through sixth grade students only.  I will be counting the minutes from the
Reading Log Bookmarks that they turn in during the months of December and January.
They will need to turn in 4 or more reading log bookmarks.
So, they have from Dec. 1st through Jan. 31st to accummulate 360 minutes of recreational
reading, school assignments cannot be counted on any reading logs.  Reading Logs turned
in before or after these dates will not be counted toward the Free Six Flags tickets.
You and/or your students can pick up reading log bookmarks from the library anytime
it's open.  Teachers with one or more students who earn free tickets will also earn a free
ticket for themselves.
Let me know if anyone has any questions.
Mary

Enjoy a good book this summer!

Library News

Several students are earning prize tickets and free pizzas by reading books.  Now students can also earn free ice cream and a Six Flags ticket.  Please read and keep the SCA Reading Incentives information included in this Thursday Envelope.  You’ll want to refer to this information periodically throughout this school year.  You’ll find important facts regarding all the reading incentives going on this year.

The following students will find a free Pizza Hut coupon in this Thursday Envelope for reading 300 or more minutes in October and/or November.  October – Madeline Sabedra, Nicholas Romo, Gerardo Vazquez, Oyuki Rubio, Raquel Cervantes, and Elizabeth Cerda.

November - Madeline Sabedra, Gerardo Vazquez, Andrew Gonzalez, Yazmin Narvaez, Sofia Soto, and Gilberto Gonzalez.

Come in and see the many SCA Library Stars with their names posted on the wall of the library showing how many minutes they’ve read so far this year.  There are nine Star Level Goals for all students to reach by the end of this school year.  Only twenty students have read 300 or more minutes this year and have met the first goal, Red.  Of those 20 students, Nicholas Romo is now on Orange, Elizabeth Cerda and Andrea Gonzalez are now on Yellow, Gilberto Gonzalez is on blue, Madeline Sabedra is on Bronze, and Gerardo Vazquez is on Silver.

Please encourage your child to participate in all the Reading Incentives by recording the minutes he/she reads on a Library Stars Reading Log bookmark, signing it, and turning it in to Mrs. Krieg in the library.

HELP!!  Mrs. Krieg needs several volunteers to help shelve books in the library.  Please contact her for more information ASAP!!  You can reach her by email at mkrieg@santaclaraacademy.org or by calling the school or by going into the library to talk to her.

Mrs. Krieg is managing several reading incentive programs through the school library.  These programs are running simultaneously through May 16th.  The program sponsors require that students meet various reading goals in order to earn prizes.  All reading for these programs must be done at home under the supervision of a parent or guardian and not during school.  Students can pick-up and return their Library Stars Reading Log bookmarks and Braum’s Book Review forms in the library anytime the library is open, i.e. 12:45-4:30 p.m. each school day.  Each reading log bookmark logs 100 minutes of reading time.

The programs and their goals and prizes include the following:

Braum’s/Book Buddy – Each time a 1st-5th grade student reads SIX books on their reading level between now and May 16th, the child will earn a coupon for a free treat from Braum’s.  Documentation of books read is a completed Braum’s Book Review form available from Mrs. Krieg in the library.  Only 1st graders can use picture books.  2nd-5th graders should read books with 50 or more numbered pages.  Below is a list of suggested series titles and authors:  An I Can Read Book, Magic Tree House, Nate the Great, Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys mysteries, Choose Your Own Adventure, books by Elspeth Murphy, Patricia Giff, Beverly Cleary, Bill Wallace, plus many others.  Ask Mrs. Krieg for a suggestion.  Remember:  Only 1st graders can use picture books.  2nd-5th graders should read books with 50 or more numbered pages.  If in doubt, ask Mrs. Krieg.

Pizza Hut/Book It! – Each month from October through March, K-6th grade students can earn a certificate for a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza.  Students must meet the monthly reading goal of 300 minutes to qualify for the free pizza coupon.  Documentation of minutes read is 3 completed reading log bookmarks turned-in during the same month.

Six Flags/Read to Succeed – Each K-6th grade student who reads 6 hours (or 360 minutes) from December 1st to January 31st will earn a free ticket to Six Flags, which they can redeem the summer of 2008.  Documentation of minutes read is 4 reading log bookmarks turned-in to Mrs. Krieg between these dates.

SCA LIBRARY NEWS

MAY 8, 2008

Notice:  All library books must be returned and all fines paid by Friday, May 23rd.  Final report cards will be not be released for students who have any books or fines due at the end of the school year.

Announcement:  The children’s librarian from the Arcadia Park Branch of the Dallas Public Library will come to SCA on Monday, May 19th, to tell students about the Summer Reading Programs and to motivate them to participate for various prizes.  Like the past 2 years, the school library will host an SRC (Summer Reading Club) Party in September for all students who bring a certificate from their local public library indicating that they read the required minimum during the summer.   Those qualifying students will earn an invitation to the party, a free dress down day, extra recess, refreshments, and a goodie bag.  Parents often add their own motivating prizes at home during the summer for their own children.  It is very important to keep children reading daily during the summer months.  The schedule for the librarian’s visit is as follows:
Monday, May 19th, in the library.  (Parents are welcome to join us to show support and encouragement for the summer reading programs.)
12:45-1:15 – Pre-kindergarten & Kindergarten
1:15-1:45 - 1st & 2nd grades
1:45-2:15 – 3rd & 4th grades
2:15-2:45 – 5th, 6th, & 7th grades
Please encourage your children to participate in various reading incentives programs throughout the summer.  Barnes and Noble also offers a reading incentive:  Read 8 books and get a free book.

Recognition:  Many of our students have been very busy reading throughout the school year, but only one K-6th grade student met Pizza Hut’s “Book It!” reading goal of 300 minutes per month consistently every month from October through March.  Congratulations to Madeline Sabedra for her exceptional self-discipline in meeting her goals so consistently.  This was not an easy task to achieve!

Recognition:  Free ticket to Six Flags for seven.  This year we have 7 students from K-6th grade who recorded and turned-in six hours of reading logs during December and January and qualified to receive a free ticket to Six Flags.  Those 7 students are the following:  Madeline Sabedra, Andrea Gonzalez, Ashley Rodriguez, Gerardo Vazquez, Adriana Chavez, Brianna Adame, and Katherine Fernandez.  The free Six Flags tickets are only valid from June 19, 2008 to August 10, 2008.  These students will receive their ticket with their final report card in May.

Announcement:  The Used Book Sale has been cancelled.  Because no used books have been donated to the library for the sale, the library will not be hosting a Used Book Sale this month as originally planned.  However, please consider cleaning out your bookcases at home this summer and donating your used books to the library for a future book sale.

Thank you:  In January, the library received a very generous gift from Scholastic’s Reading Cares Program and sponsored by Anson Jones Elementary School.  The SCA library received 100 paperback and hardcover books to be added to the library and used in the classrooms.  Thank you very much Anson Jones Elementary for including Santa Clara Academy in this wonderful program.

Thank you:  Many thanks goes out to the six wonderful parents who are volunteering to catalog library books from their homes.  These very generous volunteers include Marlane Mendoza, Mrs. Gonzalez, Viola Valdez, Maria Gryder, Alma Zuniga, and Sandra Soto.  This HUGE project will take years to complete without volunteers like these wonderful ladies.  Please consider volunteering to serve SCA by working on this project.  It is easy to learn and can be done from the comfort of your home computer.  All you need is a little training and internet access.

For comments, questions, or information, please contact Mrs. Mary Krieg, SCA Librarian, at mkrieg@santaclaraacademy.org.  Thank you very much.
