Academics

Instruction at SCCA

At Santa Clara of Assisi we offer a strong dual-language academic program to form our students as saints and scholars, and to prepare them for the college or career of their choice. Our focus this year is on student engagement and building strong PLCs to support first instruction in Reading and Math. We use data to drive instruction and provide tiered support through our MTSS process.

Classes Offered at Santa Clara
  • Our 2-way dual language program starts in PreK-3 and goes through 5th grade.
  • Our middle school program is from 6th-8th grade and includes Spanish as a subject.
  • We have an athletics program including many sports, such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, futsal, swimming, and more
  • Kindergarten through 8th grade attend STEM Lab.
  • Middle School takes electives such as guitar, sports, crafts, and more.
  • Sacramental preparation is included in the school day. Students are prepared to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in 8th grade.
  • We offer a well-rounded academic program. All students attend art, music, and physical education classes and visit the library on a weekly basis.

Standards We Follow

Saints and Scholars Curriculum Standards

Our school uses the Saints and Scholars curriculum standards from the Diocese of Dallas. These standards are an adaptation of the TEKS that are grounded in Catholic Identity and stream-lined to provide a guaranteed and viable curriculum for all students in our Catholic Schools.

Our Preschool Program

Our preschool program starts at age three.

Education in our preschool program develops students' foundational language and literacy skills in both English and Spanish, preparing them for success in Kindergarten.

In preschool our students explore different science and social studies topics such as life cycles, weather, and community helpers through hands on learning centers and experiences. We believe preschool students learn by doing, and we give them opportunities to learn and develop!

Our preschool program also helps students to develop independence, self-regulation, and social emotional skills.

For more information on our preschool program, please schedule a campus tour and come see our littlest learners in action.

Language Arts Curriculum

Our Reading and Language Arts program starts with strong vertical alignment with our campus instructional planning calendar. All grades explore fiction, informational text, poetry, and persuasive text as a vertical team before branching into independent genres thereafter. Our principal resource is the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's dual language textbooks and resources, a comprehensive language arts program equitable in both English and Spanish. It includes targeted grammar, phonics, spelling, writing, and reading comprehension instruction in both languages with a large variety of authentic and multi-cultural texts.

For middle school, grades 6th-8th use Into Literature in English only. This is the companion program to Into Reading / Arriba la Lectura which has additional depth and complexity for students at the middle school level.

OUR CATHOLIC IDENTITY

Catholic identity is the center of our school community. The Eucharist appears in our logo, stands at the heart of our campus, and is held high by Santa Clara in the statue that greets every visitor. The weekly celebration of Mass unites us as a community of faith, and on days without Mass, students attend religion class, where they learn Catholic teaching, values, and tradition, and are prepared to receive the Sacraments. Passing these values on to the next generation is at the very core of who we are.

Science Education

We are proud of our Outdoor Classroom, which offers students many hands-on experiences for science. Although we use textbooks for the science classes, we also have many hands-on science kits from Lakeshore and FOSS to help students make real life connections.

Science is taught in Spanish for grades PreK through 5th grade. Grades Kindergarten through 5th grade use the Texas version of Science Fusion in Spanish, which is aligned to the TEKS and focuses on hands-on experiential learning.

In middle school, each grade level has a specific focus, and uses text books specific to that content area:

  • 6th grade: Earth Science
  • 7th grade: Life Science
  • 8th grade: Physical Science

Math in Focus (K-8)

We utilize the Math in Focus curriculum, an American adaptation of Singapore Math, which is world-renowned for leading students to excellence in math.

The Singapore Math model focuses on the concrete -> pictorial -> abstract progression because students will only grasp abstract concepts well if they have a firm understanding of the underlying concrete foundations first. Hands-on materials and visual models are an important part of this method.

We teach this math program in a way that is fully aligned to our Diocesan curriculum standards.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies program is grounded in Catholic Social teaching, particularly in our call to live in community with one another, respect for human dignity, and care for the poor and vulnerable. These Catholic values are the lens through which we study history and what it means to live as a community.

In our dual language program, Social Studies is taught in Spanish for grades PreK through 5th grade, with weekly vocabulary enrichment in English.

In grades PreK through 3rd grade, students learn an age-appropriate variety of concepts related to history, geography, communities, government, and economics.

For grades 4th through 8th grade, each grade level has a specific focus:

  • 4th grade: Texas History, Geography, Government, and Economics
  • 5th grade: US History, Geography, Government, and Economics
  • 6th grade: World History, Geography, Government, and Economics
  • 7th grade: Texas History, Geography, Government, and Economics
  • 8th grade: US History, Geography, Government, and Economics
